Clay-base ceramic tiles are an ideal choice for kitchens, baths, basements, porches, laundry rooms, and other moisture-prone areas. Floor tiles are extremely durable; water-, stain-, and wear-resistant; and easy to care for. An array of colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes is available. Tiles larger than 12 inches square are currently the most popular choice.
Even as Ceramic Tiles are amazing, finishing a Tile floor or a Tile Wall with Wall Bases and Base boards made of ceramic tiles, is a bad idea. These wall bases are not aesthetically appealing because they cannot present a seamless finish. The tile edges stand out and unless these are very high quality tiles with original non-plain designs, the edges do not fade in, but stand out.
The main reason people try to use Ceramic tiles is because it easy to maintain especially when there is a lot of water around. Wood or MDF baseboards usually do not fit well with this particular feature of ceramic floors, because they swell with moisture.
Vinyl baseboards are not rigid and cannot be recycled. So people end up using ceramic tiles by itself. That is, until now!
Santa Luzia baseboards are made of polystyrene, a fully recycled and recyclable material unlike Vinyl. Besides Vinyl or rubber wall bases do not have the structural rigidity of Polystyrene. On the other hand Besides Polystyrene can give you more LEED points and being fully recyclable, is a superior sustainable alternative.
But wood and MDF it is also good to look at but the big utilitarian advantage of Ceramic Flooring that is its ease of wash would be neutralized by choosing wood or MDF. Wood and MDF can be damaged by moisture.
If you are installing Ceramic Flooring, Polystyrene is clearly the best kind of Baseboard or Molding. Santa Luzia is the leader in Polystyrene moldings and baseboards.
